This book is a collection of writings on various aspects of filial piety, the values of care and respect for parents and the elderly in East Asia. The purported decline of the practice has become a serious issue in modern East Asian nations because of the significant impact it has had on the status of well-being of the elderly. This growing concern has necessitated a critical review of the willingness of younger generations to practice filial piety, a basic moral issue which until recently had not been questioned. This book is dedicated to the exploration of concrete ways in which eldercare and elder respect are practiced by younger generations of today. Articles in this book present specific items and measures indicating behavioral as well as attitudinal expressions of filial piety that have been identified through an extensive review of literature, empirical studies of adults and elders, and cross-cultural studies. The entire book comprises of four parts. Part I (Chapters 1-3) seeks to define the types of expressions for filial piety in modern times, while Part II (Chapters 4-6) introduces perspectives on the context of eldercare, in which traditionally family-centered filial piety is practiced in changing times. Part III (Chapters 7-8), discusses elder respect, the point most stressed in the teachings of filial piety. Part IV (Chapter 9) is concerned with cross-cultural comparisons between Koreans in East Asia and in the West. This book offers the readers conceptual tools and guides to practice and research elder care and elder respect in modern times, and to understand the continuity of family support, interdependent relations between generations, and the resilience of filial piety tradition in the East Asian cultural context.
